That's the question the website of Grassroutes start with ! And it answer is to bring you in an indian village, close to Mumbai, to sleep in a correct accomodation (a 2 bedroom tent indeed !) with correct toilets ! And the opportunity to discover life in rural areas while you rest !
Iris is one of the investee of Unltd India I met in my meeting in december. He starts his project recently and try to avoid all the traps of social tourism. He basicaly works towards the development of community managed rural tourism. After his 2 first "test villages" of Purushwadi and Shenit, somewhere in the south of Mumbai (Maharastrha), he want to develop a network of villages. Let's remember Maharasthra is not only the place of the financial and business capital of India. It's also the place where you find the most important number of farmer's suicide (4000 in 2007). The idea is to let local people manage tourism effectively, "while protecting and preserving their culture, tradition and environment" Next time you come to visit me, let's go to Purushwadi and help me replicate the experience in Tamil Nadu ! And discover it on http://grassroutes.co.in/
